John “Jack” T. O’Brien, 76 died on Friday evening, November 26, 2004 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. C.F. Wilhelm will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, November 30, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 6:30 p.m. The Rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the Funeral Mass. Serving as Pallbearers will be: Ray Schwan, Eddie Everson, Richard Ziegler, Mark Schafer, Greg Schafer and Richard Hagel. John Thomas O’Brien was born on May 16, 1928 at Devils Lake the son of Edward “Ned” and Coral (Torrance) O’Brien. He attended grade school in Cato Township, rural Webster, ND and graduated from Devils Lake High School in the class of 1946. He also attended the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo, ND. Jack was united in marriage to Irene Schafer on April 25, 1949 at Crary, North Dakota. They established their home on the family farm in Cato Township where they farmed and raised their family. Jack was the third generation to farm this land. In 1984, Jack retired from farming but continued to make his home on the farm. In 1988, Jack and Irene moved to Devils Lake where they have since lived. Jack was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Jack was an avid reader, spending many hours reading newspapers and magazines cover to cover. He especially loved time spent with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all. Jack is survived by his wife of 55 years, Irene Children: Valerie Toso of Edmore, ND Coral Berg and her husband, Allen of Johnstown, ND John O’Brien and his wife, Pam of Webster Michael O’Brien and his wife, Denise of Cando, ND Thirteen Grandchildren Five Great Grandchildren Brothers: Edward (Julie) O’Brien, Florida William “Bill” O’Brien, New York Many Nieces, Nephews and Cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Thomas.
