Evelyn “Evie” Mellem, 94 a long time resident of Devils Lake died on Tuesday evening, March 7, 2006 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Evie will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Harold Ovre will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to services. In honor of Evie, the family encourages all women to wear hats to the service. Serving as Casket Bearers for Evie will be her grandchildren, Brian Love, Rebecca Vik, Meredith Farrell, Jeffrey Van Kirk, Paul Hoghaug, Erik Hoghaug, Monica Murphy, Steven Mann, Philip Mann and Elizabeth Mann. Music will be provided by Karyn Ovre, Soloist and Lynda Pearson, Organist Evelyn Brown was born on October 31, 1911 at St. Hilaire, Minnesota to Earl and May Violet (Amble) Brown. She was educated in Grand Forks and Fargo. On September 1, 1934 she married Al Mellem. They moved to Devils Lake in 1942 and lived there all but two years which they spent in Santa Barbara and Concord, California. Mr. Mellem died on June 5, 1997. Evelyn owned and operated “Evie’s Tot Shop” for a number of years and also clerked at Glickson’s and Devils Lake Drug. Together, Evie and Al also operated their business, The Bottle Shop for many years. Mr. Mellem died on June 5, 1997. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She was Past Matron of Lorraine Chapter No. 15 and Order of Eastern Star. She belonged to the Olive Branch of the Rebekah’s Lodge No. 9, the VFW Auxiliary, R.S.V.P (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and enjoyed working with the Rainbow Girls. A happy moment for Evie was when she was presented with a certificate for volunteering 2,638 hours with the Rainbow Girls. Evie is survived by her three loving daughters: Monica Jo Van Kirk, Rochester, Minnesota Bonnie Hoghaug of Chanhassen, Minnesota Kathryn Mann and her husband, Fred of Plymouth, Minnesota Ten Grandchildren: Brian, Rebecca, Meredith and Jeffrey, Paul, Erik and Monica; Steven, Philip and Elizabeth. Thirteen Great Grandchildren Brother: Don (Dolly) Purvis of Visalia, California Long Time Special Friend, Myrtle Anderson of Webster, ND She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Judy; husband, Al; sisters, Nina Wick and Fyrne Rudh; brothers, Bob, Jack, Bill, Dick and Van Purvis.
