Ellen C. Volk

Ellen C. Volk, 66 of rural Devils Lake, ND died on Wednesday morning, February 10, 2010 at her home. A Memorial Service for Ellen will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday, February 15, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Jeff Nicla, Pastor St. Olaf Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery in the spring. Music will be provided by Melissa Langer, soloist. Ellen was born on June 16, 1943 at Devils Lake, ND the daughter of Joseph M. and Cecilia (Bryn) Hegge. Ellen was baptized at the Norway Lutheran Church and was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Ellen attended elementary school at Morris #1 and Morris #2 country schools. She graduated from Devils Lake High School with the class of 1961. She then attended Minot State University and after graduating worked as a Medical Technician at Belcourt and Garrison, ND. Ellen was united in marriage to Thomas H. Volk on December 29, 1966 at Devils Lake. Tom died on March 13, 1999. Ellen was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Ellen loved the outdoors, working with trees, plants and ridding the world of weeds. Ellen was a true steward of the land. She always had a large garden, raspberry and Juneberry patches. After all of her hard work, she generously gave away the produce to her family and friends. Ellen enjoyed working with wood; finishing her new home at the lake. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially teaching her great nephews and nieces and other children the wonders of nature. Ellen is survived by her loving children, her son Duane P. Volk of Devils Lake and daughter Christine A. Volk of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Dominique Volk and Cameron Volk also of Tucson; mother, Cecilia Hegge of Devils Lake; sisters, Joan (Ron) Lindberg of Perth and Dorothy (Melvin) Bish of Sun City West, Arizona; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Earl) Obermiller, Mary (Jerry) Riley, Virginia Volk and Loretta (Pat) O’Connell ; brothers-in-law, Richard (Kaye) Volk, Jim (Janet) Volk and David (Judy) Volk; Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and cousins also survive. Ellen was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Hegge; husband, Tom; sister, Betty White and brother, Joseph Robert “Bob” Hegge;
