Alfred Albert, son of Pierre and Anna (Grenier) Mongeon was born on June 27, 1930, in Rolla, ND. He grew up on the family farm, in rural Rolette attending school at the Shell Valley Township School, Dunseth, Rolla and Rolette Public Schools and graduated from high school in Riverside CA. After graduating, Alfred stayed in California, working for his brother Leo.
While in California he reconnected with June Myrum. Her family had lived as neighbors to the Mongeon’s for several years. Alfred and June were united in marriage on January 12, 1955, at the Catholic Church in Buena Park, California. Later that year, they moved back to North Dakota and called Rolette home for the rest of their lives. Shortly after returning to Rolette, Alfred and June soon became caregivers to June’s twin sisters Connie and Carol as their mother had died at a very young age.
Alfred’s true passion was farming but he had several side ventures through the years, including owning and operating a bar in Rolette with his brother Dennis, owner and operator of Mongeon Implement and did Aerial Crop Spraying. He had earned his pilot’s license while living in California.
Alfred and June’s compassion, and caring heart continued even after Carol and Connie left for lives of their own. After the death of Alfred’s mother in 1962, they immediately moved out to the farm to help care for his dad until his death in 1967. They remained on the farm where they raised their boys, eventually bringing them both into the farming operation. Alfred and June moved into Rolette in 1993. June died on March 30, 2023.
One of Alfred’s pastimes was golfing, and he was able to enjoy this sport year-round when wintering in Arizona for 22 years. As a family they enjoyed many summers of camping at Killarney, Canada and Fish Lake. In these later years, he found a new fishing spot on Devils Lake and spent many weekends with his brother Dennis at his camper in Peterson Woods. Old friends and new friends were always welcome at his campsite.
Alfred was never idle. In retirement he operated a driving range in Rolette for several years, was a grounds keeper at the Rolette Country Club and was a very talented wood worker. He made many beautiful creations that were shared with his grandchildren and friends. He truly enjoyed watching Comet/Couger football games. Alfred and Orville Grenier would always be found in the JD Gator on the sidelines.
Alfred was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, Rolette Country Club, and served on several community boards through the years.
As Alfred’s health deteriorated, he felt so blessed to have the love and support of his sons and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, for the special caregivers, Traci and Travis Casavant and family, staff of Rolette Care Center and the prayerful support of the church and Rolette Community. God Bless you all.
Alfred is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Mike and Terri Jo Mongeon and William and Gail Mongeon all of Rolette; grandchildren Mason Mongeon Los Angeles, CA, Matthew (Anna) Mongeon, Rolette, Kelsey Dalziel, Devils Lake, ND, Kacey Mongeon, Australia and Garrett Mongeon, Rolette; great grandchildren Charlie Dalziel and twins Wells and Birdie Mongeon; sister Sr. Germaine Stephanie Mongeon, St. Cloud MN; sister-in-law Alice Myrum, Devils Lake; many dear nephews, nieces and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife June, son Michael A. Mongeon, siblings Roland, Leo, Janet Evans, Adrien, Eugene, Armand, Lorraina Trimble, Dennis and two brothers in infancy and in-laws Samuel and Emma Myrum.
The farmer's life well-trod, a gift of earth and sod. Rest now in the land you loved, in skies above, be embraced and hugged. Rest in peace.
