Alvin Loren Schroeder, 70 years old passed away at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital on Monday, August 11, 2025.
Born in Michigan, ND on September 17, 1954, to Arthur and Ann (Hultin) Schroeder. He graduated in 1972 from Lakota High School then continued his education at NDSSS in Wahpeton ND, earning a degree in Diesel Mechanics.
Alvin was united in marriage to Debbie Moen on September 10, 1977, at Whitman, ND. Alvin worked at Nelson M&I, Himle Plumbing and Devils Lake Equipment. He then began a 30-year career with the city of Devils Lake Fire Department, retiring November 2019. He served as a volunteer fire fighter for 51 years. Retirement allowed him more time to spend with his grandchildren. He was very proud of each of them and cherished every minute of time with them. They each shared a special bond they will hold forever.
Alvin served as a mentor for the Amachi Program. He was a Boy Scout Leader, and enjoyed unique events with the troops, such as building Ice Igloos and camping trips.
Alvin took pride in working with his son Ryan in Go Kart Racing and later Wissota Car Racing. He enjoyed traveling around the country, watching Ryan race. Eventually his grandson Brody added to the racing fun and excitement.
Alvin was awarded the Mechanic of the Year in 2011 at River Cities Speedway. He often talked about his trip to Darlington Speedway in South Carolina with his niece and her husband saying “I am from North Dakota” hoping for a little extra special treatment.
He genuinely enjoyed meeting individuals through the ticket distribution service for the Devils Lake Volunteer Fire Department Fishing Tournament each year.
He was the neighborhood Grandpa who always had a sweet treat for any kiddos that stopped by his shop. The coffee pot was always on too. Speaking of coffee, Alvin so enjoyed the 2:00 coffee time at various places with his friends.
Alvin is survived by his wife Debbie of 48 years; daughter Amber (Lance) Duey of Bismarck, ND; son Ryan (Chelsi) Schroeder of Devils Lake; grandsons Austin and Collin Duey of Bismarck, Brody Kraft of Devils Lake; granddaughter Madilynn Lauren Schroeder also of Devils Lake; sisters Aileen (Duane) Sandwick and Nedra (Ted) Hoberg all of Grand Forks ND; brother-in-law Jeff (Deb) Moen, Michigan ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Art and Ann, father-in-law and mother-in-law Clinton and Gladys Moen, brothers Paul Schroeder and Arlan Schroeder, and nephew Matthew Froelich.
Visitation for Alvin will be on Monday, August 18, 2025 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 6:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, August 19th at 2:00 pm at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Reverend Lori Pankratz officiating.
