Arthur W. Schlieve

Arthur W. Schlieve, 84 of Devils Lake ND passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Eventide Heartland Care Center.

Funeral Services for Art will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake with burial in the Devils Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Arthur Wayne Schlieve, son of Robert and Mary (Jones) Schlieve was born on July 17, 1938 in Ramsey County, North Dakota one of eight children.  He grew up in the Warwick area and attended school there.   Being part of such a large family meant helping out wherever needed and also being able to make your way in the world at a young age. Art spent several years traveling to Texas to help with the fruit harvest. It was in Texas he met and later married Betty Hall on October 1, 1960 in Weslaco, TX. They lived and worked there for several years.

In 1980, the family moved to Devils Lake.  His life’s work was as a John Deere mechanic.  He worked for several years at Lake Supply for Bob Weed and eventually worked in Nebraska as a John Deere mechanic.  After he moved back to Devils Lake he worked for a time at Versatile (which wasn’t easy because it wasn’t green and yellow) until retiring.

In his younger years, Art was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. In retirement, he volunteered many hours at the Senior Center where he enjoyed many afternoons playing cards. While at home he always had a jigsaw puzzle in progress on the table.   He enjoyed membership in the Odd Fellows also.

Art’s loving family include his children Jeff Schlieve of Texas, Judy (Greg) Plemel, Starkweather, ND and Janet (C.T.) Thompson, also of Texas; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren Anthony (Lindsey) Plemel and their children Kylee and Callie, Emilie (Matt) Johnson and their children Parker, Elijah, Thea and Estella, Bethany (Alec) Carrothers and their children Bennet and Lydia and Matthew Plemel; sister Hazel Ralston and brother Don (Lola) Schlieve all of Devils Lake; many nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lyle, Leonard “Bud” and Tilford “Tillie” Schlieve, sisters Mabel Brown and Millie Johnson.
