Barbara Anne Ash

Barbara Anne Ash, 77 of Devils Lake formerly of Cando ND passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Eventide Heartland Care Center in the loving care of her family.

Funeral Services for Barbara will be held on Friday, August 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Trudy Dumont officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan ND.

Barbara Anne Westlind, daughter of Frank Erlin and Florence (Plemel) Westlind was born on September 1, 1944 in Sommerville, South Carolina.  She was reared and educated in the Cando area, attending elementary school at Hard Wheat School in rural Cando and graduating from Cando High School with the class of 1962.  She continued her education at St. Andrew’s School of Nursing in Bottineau ND.

Barbara was united in marriage to Duaine Ash on November 24, 1971 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake where they have been active members through the years.

Barbara began employment with the North Dakota Telephone Company in 1971 and retired in 2008 after 37 years of dedicated service.

Barbara was an active member of the community, working as a volunteer with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), BPW (Business and Professional Woman), and a lifetime member of the Lake Region Anglers and VFW Auxiliary.  She also served on the North Dakota Game and Fish Advisory Board for 8 years.

Any spare time Barbara had you would find her at the bowling alley, bowling in Women’s League, Mixed League and bowling with family and friends whenever she could. 

Barbara was that smiling face, the cheerful hello to everyone she met. She was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Barbara’s loving family include her husband of 50 years, Duaine Ash; sons Roger (Jill) Ash of Scott Depot, West Virginia, Barry (Michelle) Ash, Devils Lake and Brian Ash, Anna Texas; five grandchildren Cassandra (Chad Starcher) Ash and Paige Ash, Carson (Shelby) Adam, Brady (Brianna) Ash and Danielle Ash; two great grandchildren Ethan Goetz and Eli Adam; brothers Gary (Diane) Westlind, Colorado and Greg (Janet) Westlind, Cando ND; brothers-in-law Larry (Sandy) Ash, Mesa AZ and Darrel (Linda) Ash, Underwood ND; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law Victor and Leona Ash. 

Honorary Bearers will be Barb’s Grandchildren and her wonderful caregivers. Music will be provided by Carson and Shelby Adam. Readers will be Brady Ash and Roger Ash. Special thanks to Eventide Heartland Memory Care Unit Staff and Dr. Jackie Downs.
