Bernard "Bernie" A. Deplazes

(Bernie) Alban Deplazes was born March 27th 1942 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake ND. to Bernard and Voilet (Verke) Deplazes. Bernie passed peacefully on Wednesday Dec 2nd after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bernie attended Ontairo Township one room school in Crary ND and later graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Devils Lake in 1960. After High School Bernie held various jobs while living at the Devils Lake Fire Hall and volunteering as a fireman.

He later joined the Navy and after basic training in Florida, he married the love of his life Carol Daniels on August 19th 1963 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The couple moved to Port Heuneme in California where Bernie was stationed at Point Mugu. While there, they had 3 children Troy (1964), Jacqueline (1965) and Janet (1966.) After 4 years of honorable service Bernie attended Lake Region College for drafting and surveying, moved his family to Rapid City SD and then Denver CO until settling back in Devils Lake.

Bernie worked for North Star Distributing and IF LaFleur before going back to college in Devils Lake for Carpentry. After working for Great Plains, Bernie built his own home north of Devils Lake with the help of Tim Hoffart.  He later worked as a salesman for Stoudt Ford before opening Lake Country Auto Sales with partners Paul Aaser and Jim Swigart. Years later his son Troy joined the business. Bernie ran the business for 25 years before retiring. 

After retirement he worked for Lake Region RV and Ramsey County Weed Control.

Bernie had many jobs but his most loved job was being a Grandpa. He took it very seriously and he was the best at it.  He was the "Fun Grandpa" the grand kids loved going to the farm and seeing what new stuff grandpa had for them. They also got to enjoy their grandpa’s hobbies with him, he enjoyed hunting, shooting, snowmobiling, riding horses, classic cars, golf cars and camping.  He always said “If I had known grandkids were so much fun, I would have had them first.”

Bernie was a farmer at heart and loved combining for his son-in-law in Windsor ND. He was a dedicated part of the crew for 15 years and ran a 1997 John Deere 9600. This was his combine and no one else could run it and Craig wasn’t allowed to trade it. 

Bernie was a life-time member for the Knights of Columbus and the VFW and also belonged to the Eagles and Elks Clubs.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol, son Troy (Stacie) Larimore ND, daughters, Jacqueline (Craig) Staloch Windsor ND, Janet (David) Harrington Maxwell IA.  Grandchildren, Christoper (Kellie) Wentz, Haley (Colby) Gannon, Justin (Tiffany) Staloch, Will Staloch, Wyatt Staloch, Samantha Staloch, Alyna (Conner) Johnson, Amanda Harrington and Davey Harrington and Great Grandchildren Christopher Jr., Maya, Malika and Jade. Sisters, Connie (Jack) Klecker Surprise AZ, Kathy (Kent) Sundeen Sharon ND, brothers, Kenny (Jan) Deplazes Devils Lake, Richard (Jeanne) Deplazes Farmington MN, brothers-in-law, Eddie (Bev) Daniels Drake ND, Donnie (Colleen) Daniels, Mike (Kim) Daniels, Pat (Dawn) Daniels all of Devils Lake and sister-in-law, Amy (Terry) Turner Priest River ID.

He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws Ed and Frances Daniels.

Pallbearers: Chris Wentz, Justin Staloch, Will Staloch, Wyatt Staloch, Davey Harrington, Connor Johnson and Colby Gannon.

Honorary Pallbearers: Haley Gannon, Alyna Johnson, Amanda Harrington, Samantha Staloch and Tiffany Staloch.

Mass of Christian Burial for Bernie will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.  The funeral Mass will be live-streamed at www.facebook.com/stjosephdvl.

Visitation at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, December 8th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. led by Reverend Mr. Ken Severinson, Deacon.
