November 1, 1948 — April 1, 2020

Carol M. Herman (Gravelle)

Carol M. Herman, 71 of Warwick formerly of Grand Forks and St. Michael, ND passed away at her home on Wednesday evening, April 1, 2020.  She was in the loving care of her husband Joe, daughter Lori and Altru Hospice.

Carol Mary, daughter of Ernest and Myrtle (Vik) Gravelle was born on November 1, 1948 in Grand Forks ND where she grew up and was educated. While working in Grand Forks, she met Joseph Herman and they were united in marriage on October 29, 1983 in Fort Totten.

They moved to the Lake Region, living in Minnewaukan, Oberon, St. Michael and since 1996 Warwick ND. They lived, worked and raised their family through the years.  Carol worked at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort for 12 years, retiring in 2011 due to health issues.  Carol also proudly obtained her GED through the Candeska Cikana Community College.

First and foremost, Carol was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and beloved sister and aunt. She loved spending time with her husband and family; taking little “mini” vacations and traveling.  She was an excellent baker and often baked for Joe’s co-workers, whom loved every snack! She had a treasured collection of DVD’s and VHS movies, always getting her favorite on the day it was released.  She was a savvy shopper and known for stocking up which meant her daughter Lori often went “shopping” at Mom’s County Market, where Carol would tease that Lori got groceries at the “best price around”-Free!

Carol fought her cancer courageously and felt so very blessed, to have the love and support of family. Joe and Lori lovingly cared for Carol, they were at her side always.

Carol’s loving family include her husband for over 36 years, Joe; daughters Lori Sue Frost (Cory Anderson) of Warwick and Julie Marie Spicer, Grand Forks; son Billy Joe Herman also Warwick; step children Jovel Campbell, Great Falls MT, Bernie Montes, Lisa Herman Rivera and Lynelle (Raul) Herman Cruz all of Salt Lake City UT, Joseph Herman Jr., New Effington SD and Casey Brown, Kansas City KS; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; sister Sharol Gladue, Lake Bronson MN; many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Ronald, Robert, Paul, Gary and Duane Gravelle, Joanne Gravelle, Elizabeth Bouvette, Gail Dannett and Jean Gust, step-son Justin Herman and mother-in-law Flora Culbertson.

Special thanks to all for the wonderful care, help and guidance; Dr. Downs, Eventide Good Samaritan, Altru Hospice, CHI ER Physicians, Altru Ambulance, Spirit Lake Ambulance and the many friends who always asked about her. God Bless You.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday, April 9, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a Funeral Mass and burial to be held at a later date. Please know how much the family appreciates all your love and support but understand the precautionary steps that must be taken in this very uncertain time of COVID 19.
