Carol Hoiberg

It is with heavy hearts, but heavenly praise, that the family of Carol Hoiberg announce her passing on March 11, 2020, in Fargo, ND. She was 90 years old.

Carol Evelyn Olson was born on December 27,1929, to Karl and Alice (Halldorson) Olson in Devils Lake, ND. Appropriately named for the Christmas season, Carol brought joy and cheer to all around her. That cheer was put to good use when she was a senior at Devils Lake High School and a stand-out on the cheerleading squad. She relished and was very proud of this her entire life. She graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1947 and shortly after married the love of her life, Hollis “Holly” Hoiberg of Pekin, ND. Just a year later they welcomed twin boys, Ronald and Dale.  Three more children would follow, Dana Kay (stillborn 1952), Scott David (1954), and Lisa Louise (1957). Carol adored her family and was fiercely loyal to them throughout her life. She raised her family with the passion and traditions of her Norwegian and Icelandic heritage, of which she was very proud. She even traveled to Norway to meet family members and wrote family history books that are treasured by immediate and extended family members alike.

Carol loved and appreciated beauty and sought to create it within herself, her home, and all of her surroundings. She had a beautiful soft voice and wonderful laugh that could make anyone smile. Although she may have looked meek on the surface, she was strong and fought for what she believed was right. That strength continued with her until her very last moments. She was a fighter, but when Jesus came and took her by the hand, she followed. She was a devoted Lutheran and a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, where it gave her great joy to serve the Lord and community.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her daughter, Dana Kay, her parents, her husband, and her son, Ron. She will be greatly missed by her children, Dale Hoiberg (David) of Chicago, IL, Scott Hoiberg (MaryJo) of Mankato, MN, Lisa Askew (Mark) of Fargo, ND; her beloved grandchildren, Joseph Hoiberg (Jessica) of Muscatine, IA, Brandon Askew (Kayle) of Fargo, ND, and Brittany Brown (Lamar) of Fort Worth, TX; and great-granddaughter Laken Askew of Fargo, ND.

Carol had a sweet innocence combined with the quiet confidence of God that allowed the power of Christ to shine through her and impact many people in her life. No one will ever be able to take her place and her family is so grateful to have been a part of this special woman’s life.

She will be remembered on March 14 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and laid to rest next to her husband, parents, and daughter in Devils Lake Cemetery.
