Carole M. Mattern

Carole Marie Miller, daughter of Merten C. and Bernice (Rice) Miller was born in Devils Lake ND on April 23, 1942. She grew up in Crary and graduated from Crary High School with the class of 1960.

Carole married her dear Donald Mattern on November 17, 1960 in Devils Lake. Due to Donald’s job as a lineman they lived in a variety of cities including Devils Lake, Westhope, Casselton, Rugby, St. Thomas, California, Michigan, and the last move back to Devils Lake where they made their forever home. While living in the various cities, if Carole wasn’t packing up or unpacking from the latest move she would work a variety of jobs to help out, but being a devoted wife, and loving, nurturing mother was always her top priority.

When they made the permanent move to Devils Lake, Carole began a 13 year career as the Assistant to the Administrator of the State of North Dakota Judicial System. She was a dedicated employee but family was of upmost importance to her. They were her treasures.

Carole was an avid reader and actually did some traveling other than work related to Hawaii, Arizona, Florida and Texas.

Life can change in the blink of an eye, but love is forever.

Carole’s loving family include her husband nearly 65 years, Don; son Alan Mattern and his wife Sally of Otsego, Michigan and their children and Carole’s grandchildren and great grandchildren Tanner (Julie) Mattern and their children Alexandra and Nathan all of Plainwell, Michigan and Schuyler (Jeff) Knaub and their child Lainey all of Cameron, Montana; and son Jason Mattern of Portland, Oregon; sister Janet Ackerman of Crary; sisters-in0law Ann (Jerry) Schwab, Bismarck, ND and Mary Senger, Casa Grande, Arizona; brother-in-law Rodney Mattern of Dawson ND; many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Trevor Mattern and brother Mike Miller.

No services are planned at this time per Carole’s wishes.
