David Aaron Lohnes Jr., 66, died battling an illness at Vibra Hospital in Fargo, ND on July 26th, 2025. David was also known as Red Eagle or Wanblee Du’ta.
David was born September 21st, 1958, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of David (Red) Lohnes Sr. of St. Michael, ND and Ruth Neconish of Neopit, WI.
David spent his childhood between Minneapolis, MN and St. Michael, N.D. He grew up with his siblings, Doug, Daniel, Dana, Lisa, Pam and cousins. He was very close to his family. He met his love Linda through mutual friends in Rugby, N.D. They had 4 children Dustin, Ashley, Dylan and Tahnee. He also had a daughter, Danae and was a father figure to his nephew Dane Allapowa.
David was a true artist. He loved to draw, paint, sculpt and of course play guitar and sing. He was in a band called Red Spirit. He played with friends and family throughout his life. He created his own CD with the help of his tribe, Spirit Lake Nation; the album was called Dakota Skies. This led to his nomination for a NAMA, Native American Music Award. His love for music will forever be in his heart. He was constantly showing his nearest and dearest the latest music videos and when YouTube became a thing it was like the greatest invention in the world to him. He was able to explore all types of musical genres.
Throughout his creative pursuits he maintained being a father to his children. He had a big heart and was known for being a family man who gave advice or offered an ear. He cared a lot for his friends and family.
David leaves behind his children: Dustin Lohnes, Ashley (Orlin Webster Jr.) Lohnes, Dylan (Sammie Jo Charboneau) Lohnes of Detroit Lakes, MN. Tahnee Lohnes, Dane Allapowa of the Fargo-Moorhead area and Danae (RC Old Coyote Sr.) Bowman of Milwaukee, WI. He is survived by his brothers Erik Lohnes, Daniel (Ruby) Lohnes, Dana (Loren) Lohnes, of the Devils Lake/Ft. Totten area. His sisters Lisa (Vincent) Romero, of Albuquerque, NM and Pamela (Holybull) Lohnes of Fargo, ND. He was close to his cousins Angel, Toni, Boogins, Scott, Alfie and Chris, Pat, Tony, Ron and Bob, Jesse Butts, Eugene and Mona, the Hunts and other family members that he loved. He is preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Neconish, his father David Lohnes Sr., Aunt Romaine Delabrue, Brothers Derrick Lohnes and Douglas Lohnes, Nephew Adrian Lohnes and many friends that became family.
The Wake for David will be at the Tekakwitha Center, St. Michael, ND on Thursday, July 31, 2025 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. from City Plaza, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church on Friday, August 1, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Paul Schuster celebrating the Mass. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery. Thank you all for your support, prayers and thoughts.
