Obituary

Dean Dale Boatman

August 28, 1950 – March 18, 2026

Dean Dale Boatman, 75, passed away on March 18, 2026. Born in Devils Lake, North Dakota, Dean spent most of his life in Hampden, ND, where he built his life as a farmer and auctioneer. As a farmer, he was known for showing up for the people around him — helping neighboring farmers when it counted and building lasting connections with the families he worked alongside. His auctioneer work brought its own rewards, including a business partnership with a dear friend that meant as much to him as the work itself.

Dean was the kind of man people were drawn to — funny, easy-going, and genuinely good company. He had a gift for friendship and made it look effortless. In his later years he made his home in Edmore, ND, before returning to Devils Lake, where he spent his final year. He looked forward each winter to the warmth of Mesa, Arizona, where the sunshine agreed with his easy spirit.

He is survived by his daughter, Sonja Boatman Anderson and her husband Isaac Anderson; his sister, Linda Boatman Iversen Powell; his brother, Kevin Boatman and his wife Cathy Boatman; and his nieces, Veronica and Cecily. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Gladys Boatman; his brothers, Larry and Lyle; his brother-in-law, Richard; and his son, Kriss, whose passing left a mark on Dean that never fully healed. The two shared a rare bond — alike in so many ways — and Dean carried the weight of that loss with him every day after.

A celebration of Dean’s life will be held on June 13th. Details will be shared with family and friends in the weeks ahead.
