Donald Henry Connor, age 91, of Chillicothe, Illinois, passed away peacefully in the very early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Lacon Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Born on February 2, 1934, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, Don was the son of John Joseph and Kathleen Ann (Baker) Connor. He grew up on the family farm near Starkweather, often sharing fond memories of his youth, his siblings, and the farm ponies, Midget, Master, and Muggins. He and his sister were home-schooled for a year as they recovered from polio in 1946-47. Don attended Central High School in Devils Lake, where his leadership skills were evident as he served as class president in 1952. He was also a talented musician, playing first chair clarinet in the State Governor's Band.
Don earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Dakota State University. This led him to a distinguished 40-year career at Caterpillar Tractor Company, where he met the love of his life, Caroline Francis McFarden of Pekin, Illinois. They were married on May 4, 1957, and together built a beautiful life over their 68 years of marriage.
Don's professional life at Caterpillar was marked by significant achievements, earning the title of Chief Engineer. He held several key patents related to engine components, furthering his expertise by obtaining a Master's degree in Engineering Management from Bradley University while working full-time. He was also active in professional organizations, holding prominent positions in groups such as the Society of Automotive Engineers.
A man known for his happy, helpful, and logical spirit, Don was affectionately called the "Peacemaker" by his parents. He was a deeply dedicated family man, attending every possible event to cheer on his children and grandchildren.
Don was also a devoted servant to his community. In Chillicothe, he acquired, maintained, and built several properties and served on numerous community boards, including the Pearce Community Center, the Chillicothe State Bank, and 3 Sisters Park. He also served as an Alderman for the city of Chillicothe and passionately supported Habitat for Humanity. His commitment to service even extended to the skies; as a U.S. Weather Bureau weather watcher, he was honored with the John Campanius Holm Award for outstanding weather observation. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, vacationing, and golfing. Don and Carol were devoted members of St. Edward's Parish, where their children attended school.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Caroline Connor, and their six children: David (Katherine) Connor of Indiana, Steven Connor of Florida, Michael (Trish) Connor of Chillicothe, Christopher (Angie) Connor of Florida, Diana (Eric) Therkildsen of Arizona, and Edward (Christina) Connor of Missouri. He also leaves behind a lasting legacy through his 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Mike (Ellen) Connor of Devils Lake, North Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings, Margaret Ann Connor, Clinton (Mary Alice now deceased) Connor, and Erin (Richard - Deceased) Archuleta.
The family extends a special and heartfelt thank you to Jeanna Adkinson and Connie Collins for their compassion, care, and friendship in his later years.
