Dorothy Hodous

GRAVESIDE SERVICE FOR DOROTHY AND GLENN WILL BE ON MONDAY, JULY 10, 2023 AT 3:00 P.M. AT THE DEVILS LAKE CEMETERY

Dorothy Hodous, 92 years old, of Devils Lake, formerly of Edmore, ND passed away on July 25, 2022 in her home with her loving family by her side. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Saturday, July 30^th, 2022 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Devils Lake, ND.

Dorothy was born on December 13, 1929 to Vera (Davidson) and Dennis (aka Monroe) Weed in Devils Lake, ND. Dorothy and her 4 siblings all attended school at the Grand Harbor School and in the winter would ride in a covered sleigh to and from school. In 1947 Dorothy graduated from Central High School in Devils Lake. She then attended a teaching college in Minot where she obtained her Teacher Emergency Certificate due to World War II.

Dorothy met the love of her life, Glenn Hodous, at the “Our Own Hardware” store in Devils Lake and they later connected at a barn dance on the Metzold farm. Dorothy LOVED to dance and Glenn…not so much. They were united in marriage on January 26, 1952 in Devils Lake, ND. They lived for a short time on a farm near Webster, ND and while there Dorothy taught at the Grand Harbor school and the Dry Lake school for a period of 5 years.

In 1956, Dorothy and Glenn moved to a farm west of Edmore where they would live until they moved to Devils Lake in the summer of 2010. Dorothy not only raised 4 children, helped farm and had a large garden, but she also worked in the Edmore Public School system for 35 years, first as a cook and then as a “teacher’s aide.” Dorothy enjoyed working with all the students and had patience for them. She was also the “bus driver” for her grandchildren that attended school there until they got their driver’s licenses. Dorothy “retired” from the school system in 2000 after her grandson, Thomas, graduated.

Dorothy was a talented artist, whose medium was wheat. Dorothy spent many hours creating beautiful pieces of wheat weavings and traveling around the areas to various craft shows to share her talents with people. Several pieces of her work are still displayed today.

Dorothy was an avid outdoors woman, who loved to fish. She was obsessed with making sure the black birds would not get the sunflowers! Dorothy had a talent for baking, especially her wheat bread and donuts. She loved her flowers and spent many hours in her flower beds or the flower beds of others.

The most important thing to Dorothy was family and friends. She loved to have company and you could not leave her place without coffee, something to eat and more than likely a game or 3 of cards. Maybe it was the teacher in her, but Dorothy taught her grandchildren, their spouses and great grandchildren how to play many different games. Dorothy always said “everyone loves to beat me.” Dorothy always made her family, immediate and extended a priority. She especially enjoyed the family breakfast that she would attend every Saturday morning with her children, nieces and nephews and other extended family at the White House Café.

Dorothy is survived by her four children: Bill (Debbie) Hodous, Devils Lake, ND; Peggy (Mike) Olderbak, Rockford, IL; Cindy (Tony) Boeddeker, Hunter, ND and Linda (Marvin Jr.) Walter, Warwick, ND. 7 grandchildren: Christine (Alistair) Stiven; Jason (Stephanie) Hodous; Thomas (Melissa) Hodous; Benjamin (Laura) Walter; Lucas (Anna) Walter; Laura (Andy) Hobart and Carrie Fulton.  Dorothy was blessed with 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Lois Weed, Carol Weed and Ila Weed and several nieces and nephews.  Dorothy was blessed to have the best neighbors in the world in apartment building 300, but especially Don and Ceya Holler, who were fabulous neighbors and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Glenn along with her parents; brothers: Richard Weed, Raymond Weed and Donald “Sonny” Weed; sister and brother-in-law: Helen and Walter Hanson along with several close cousins and in-laws.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or the Hope Center in memory of Dorothy. As a special gift to the family, please include a return address label on cards and memorials.  Thank you so much.
