Howard M. Paulsen, 80 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital.

Howard is in the care of the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, ND

Howard Marvin Paulsen, son of Chester and Belle (Tuntland) Paulsen was born on May 9, 1945, in Hannaford, North Dakota. He was reared and received his early education in the Walum, North Dakota area. After the death of his father, the family moved into Cooperstown, ND and Howard graduated from Cooperstown High School. On February 24, 1966, Howard enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country with the Fifth US Army stateside and served for a time in Korea. He was honorably discharged from active duty on January 26, 1969, with the rank of SP4 and continued with the Army Reserve until February of 1972.

While serving in the Military, Howard was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Carol Ann Dahl on April 20, 1968. Howard was stationed in Wisconsin at the time. After his discharge they returned to North Dakota and attended UND in Grand Forks where Howard earned a Degree in Accounting.

From 1975 to 1984, the family lived in Bismarck, Langdon, and Minot ND. During this time, Howard was employed as an Accountant and Carol as a Social Worker. In 1984 they moved to Cooperstown ND and Howard became owner and operator of “Diamond Craft”, a business that made industrial windows. After moving to Devils Lake in 1995, Howard worked at Spirit Lake Casino, where he continued to use his accounting skills.

They adopted their son, Robin Troy Paulsen in 1974 and their daughter Angela Dawn Paulsen in 1976.

In 1995, the family moved to Devils Lake and called it home through the years. Carol Ann passed away on August 29, 2015.

Howard first and foremost was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. His family meant the world to him. Howard loved the outdoors and the beauty of nature. As a family, they enjoyed many camping trips, boating, fishing, and hunting. When indoors, he was an avid reader. Howard always had a well-tended garden, sharing produce with family and friends. No one ever complained about his cooking either, his creations were delicious.

Howard treasured every community he lived in and was a part of the Elks Lodge activities when able.

Howard is survived by his loving family: His son Robin (Birmania) Paulsen; daughter Dawn L’Heureux all of Devils Lake; grandchildren Seth and Skylan Belleau and Ashlin and Cohen L’Heureux; brother Noel Paulsen and sister Ione Paulsen both of Minneapolis, ND; sisters-in-law Gloria Paulsen, Spokane WA and Cory Trautman, Arizona; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive.
