She grew up on the family farm in DeGroat Township and later the family moved to Dry Lake Township. She attended Devils Lake Public School, graduating from Devils Lake Central High School with the class of 1958.
Ione then answered the call to serve her country, and enlisted in the United States Navy WAVES on February 9, 1959. She completed US Naval Training at Bainbridge, Maryland and then was transferred to the Alameda/Oakland Navy Base in California to complete her service. After her honorable discharge, she remained in California. For the next 36 years, Ione worked in the moving company industry, mostly coordinating the moving and transferring of military families to other areas of the country. She used her many skills as an office manager, bookkeeper and secretary to keep the office running smoothly and efficiently.
In 1990, Ione returned to Devils Lake to care for her mother until her death in 2001. For the past 17 years, Ione has made her home at the Great Northern Apartments making many new and dear friends.
Ione was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
Ione loved the climate of California where she could enjoy the outdoors. As a car enthusiast, she loved her 1960 convertible and Volkswagen Bus. In North Dakota she was seen in her bright yellow Dodge Neon.
Ione was a sweet, kind hearted, endearing and caring soul. She held her friends close to her heart and felt so truly blessed to have the love and support of her family through the years.
Ione is survived by her brothers Wayne Skramstad, Grand Forks, ND and Darrell and his wife Mary (Kostecki) Skramstad of Watertown, MN; niece Camella (Tony) Stucchi and nephew Jason (Lori) Skramstad and great nephew and great nieces Cayden, Brynn and Rissi and many beloved cousins.
