Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of James “Jim” Schuler of Devils Lake, ND. Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at CHI St. Alexius Health in Garrison, with his family by his side.

Born on September 18, 1944, to Werner and Marcella Schuler, Jim grew up on the family farm in Calio and graduated from Munich High School in 1963. He dedicated over 20 years of service to the North Dakota Army National Guard, retiring as a Sergeant in 2004. His professional career included many years with the maintenance crew of the Great Northern Railroad (later BNSF), from which he retired in 2002.

Jim and his wife, Carol, were married on October 26, 1968, in Rock Lake, ND. They eventually made their home in Devils Lake to raise their family. Even in retirement, Jim remained active as a driver for Devils Lake Transit and spent much of his time woodworking and tending to his yard. He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.

Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol; his children, Ardell Schuler, Tami Schuler, Tiffany (Jason) Schultz, and Aaron (Miranda) Schuler; his grandchildren, Jacob Schultz, Nathan Schultz, Bridger Schuler, and Hadyn Schuler; his siblings, Arlene (Robert) Adahl and Duane Schuler; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alphonse (Sharon) Schuler, his sister Marlys (Donald) Hareland, sister-in-law Pamela Schuler and in-laws Paul and Leona Keim.

Jim served his country, his family, and his Lord with great love and devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
