Larry M. Berg

Larry M. Berg, 80 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

Funeral Services for Larry will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heartland Care Center Chapel with burial in the Leeds Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the chapel.

Larry Mervin Berg, son of Sigurd and Julia (Thompson) Berg was born on September 15, 1939 in Twin Valley, MN where he grew up and was educated, graduating from Twin Valley High School. Larry was the youngest of his 5 siblings who were all sisters and was the only male born into the Berg family who proudly carried on the Berg name.

Larry had a passion for music, sports and gardening. His passion for playing sports flourished when he was at Twin Valley High School, where he played basketball, baseball and football. He was given a scholarship at Moorhead upon graduating high school. He chose to give up that scholarship in exchange for farming with his father Sigurd in Brinsmade, ND where he eventually took over the farm.

His pride and joy were his sons, his first son Greg, born in 1959 and his second son Steve, born in 1964. He met the love of his life Gertrude Gregor in December of 1967 in Leeds, ND where they later married on June 30, 1968 at the Leeds Lutheran Church. They have been happily married for a blessed 51 years.

After Larry retired from farming in 1983, he became the owner and operator of the Flyway Cafe in Minnewaukan, ND for several years. Retirement was not in his vocabulary and no matter where they lived, Larry would find a job or a hobby to keep him busy. They eventually moved to Rolette, ND, Bottineau, ND and to the state of Kansas for a time, returning to the Lake Region area in 2013.

When Larry could no longer play sports he continued to watch sporting events of all kinds. His love of music was evident when he played the accordion and harmonica, entertaining family and friends. His gardens and his lawns were always meticulously groomed where ever they lived. When there was time to relax, Larry and Gert enjoyed many a night out at the Elks Lodge, where he was a member for many years.

Larry’s loving family include his wife Gertrude of Devils Lake; sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Jan Berg, Olathe, KS and Steve and Yvette Berg of Chino Hills, CA; grandchildren and great grandchildren Derek (Monica) Berg and children Annika and Asher, Kristen Berg and son Ashton; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Iola Tastad, Gwenivere Tweeten, Bernice Fogelstrom, Elaine Lubke and Madelyn Hayes.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Heartland Eventide, family and friends who have supported Larry and his family through the last several years and being here today as we remember and celebrate Larry M. Berg’s life.
