Lewis “Dewey” Blackbird St. Michael, ND Dewey Blackbird, 69 of St. Michael passed away on Monday evening, November 29, 2021, at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake with his family by his side. Dewey was born on January 29, 1952 to Jerome Black Bird Sr. and Beatrice Belgarde Joramo in Fort Totten, ND. Dewey grew up in the St. Michael District. Dewey received his GED from Lake Region State College in 1985. He participated in Cankdeska Cikana Community College’s carpentry program in 1984-85. He worked for various contracting companies in the Lake Region Area, working heavy equipment and constuction. Dewey most enjoyed working on cars, which was his passion and he did a lot of carpentry work for many people in the community. In 1970, Dewey married Charlene Brown from Winnebago, Nebraska. They had two children: Son Charlie Blackbird, his children: Kayla Reynolds, Ireta, Denzell, Ivory, Phoebe Blackbird and his grandchildren: Eli and Edwin Reynolds, Bear and Desiree Flowers, Leondre Blackbird, Monica and Mykal Bernie and Raelyn Frazier. Daughter Leta Blackbird (Roberto, Sr.) Gorrin, their children: Dacia, Roberto, Jr. (Ione Suarez), Drake (Thv Le Njuyen), Tyrese, Devonna Gorrin and grandchildren: Tayden Dreyson, Roberto III and Adviel. In 1985, Dewey and Evie McDonald welcomed their son Damian into the world. Dewey was a big part of our grandchildrens’ lives: Daylen Long Feather, Benjamin Sitting Crow, Alissandra Blackbird, Casen Sailor, Easten Sailor, Fayja Blackbird and Honor Belgarde. Cassie McDonald, Angela and Heather Belgarde all became a big part of Dewey’s life. He welcomed each grandbaby with happiness, pride, and enjoyed spending time with them on a daily basis. Being their papa made him happy and he was overjoyed to spend time with his grandkids and family. Dewey leaves behind his children: Charlie Blackbird, Leta (Roberto, Sr.) Gorrin, and their children and grandchildren and Damian Blackbird and his two daughters Ali and Fayja. Very special grandson Daylen Long Feather. Sisters: Darlene (Terry) Myhre, Devils Lake, Jackie (Daniel) Peltier, St. Michael, Janice Joramo Gamel, Devils Lake and Sandy Joramo, St. Michael. Brothers: Jerome “Jerry” Blackbird, Jr., Todd (Sheila) Belgarde and Jay Joramo. Aunts: Lily Owlboy, Imogene, Arlene, Audrey and Joann Belgarde. Sheila and Lulu Thompson, Joyce Green and Millie McKay and uncle Alfred Thompson. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded Dewey in death are his parents Jerome Blackbird, Sr ., and Beatrice Belgarde Joramo. Grandparents: Peter Belgarde, Sr., and Mary Jane Thompson, Charles and Florence BlackBird. Brothers Ellie “Johnny” BlackBird and Duane “Dean” BlackBird, nephews T.J.Belgarde, Davy Belgarde and Clayton Blackbird. Active Pallbearers for Dewey will be Tristan Blackbird, Bennett Blackbird, Nicholas Joramo, Eric Joramo, Phoenix Joramo, Dalton Joramo, Marcus Joramo, and Jared Gamel. Honorary Pallbearers are Steve Mercer, Terry Dunn, Sam McKay, Phillip “Scooter” Lohnes, Brian and Julie Sailor, Mary Lou Fallis, Cowboy and Jeanette Lawrence; Clayton “Stubby” DuBois, Marty Greywater, Tim Kraft and Lisa Chaske, Debbie Bendickson, Dinah Aceveda, Sam Merrick, Chance Sailor, Fred Longie, Jr., Steve Kraft, Dana Lohnes, Edith Peltier, Connie Baker, Justine McDonald, Crystal Mckay. Dewey had a lot of friends, we’re sorry if we forgot anyone. A special thank you to the Altru Dialysis Center at Mercy Hospital. Dewey appreciated all the nurses and staff for all they did for him. Visitation for Dewey will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will be a procession to St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Monday at 9:00 a.m. from the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake ND with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
