Louis M. Hartle, 85 of Fargo, formerly of rural Warwick and Devils Lake passed away Saturday August 9th, 2025 in Fargo under the care of Hospice and Essentia Health.
Visitation will be on Thursday, August 14th at St Michaels Catholic Church, Saint Michael, ND beginning at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial for Louis at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Paul Schuster officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery following mass, proceeded by lunch at the KC Hall.
Louis Michael Hartle was born on February 21, 1940, in Devils Lake, ND, to Michael J. and Margaret (Bickler) Hartle. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Warwick High School, Warwick, ND. Louis served in the ND National Guard, completing training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and he continued his active drill duties at Camp Grafton. Louis shared a lifelong bond with his brother Edwin, and together they formed the Hartle Brothers partnership, farming side by side for many years. When he wasn’t tending the fields, Louis could often be found with a fishing pole in hand, cherishing quiet moments on the water and the simple joy of a good catch especially when shared with his lifelong fishing buddy, Jerry or he could be spotted at the White House Café, enjoying coffee, conversation, and the easy camaraderie of his good friends Ervin, Jerry and his brother Edwin. In the fall of 2018, Louis and Edwin retired from farming and moved into Devils Lake.
In his later years, Louis faced the challenges of dementia, which slowly took from him the ability to reason, but never the warmth of his spirit or the kindness in his smile. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Edgewood Memory Care, where Louis lived for the past 2½ years; to his caregivers in DL, who supported him prior to his move to Fargo; and to Hospice (HIA) for the gentle and compassionate care they provided in his final weeks.
Louis is survived by his sister Isabel Liska, West Fargo and brother James Hartle, Seattle WA; nieces, Susan (Michael) Nilson, West Fargo, Stacey (John) Nelson, West Fargo, Lisa (Alex) Moreno, Dover, WI and nephews Scott(Liz) Liska, Peoria AZ and Pat (Laura) Hennessy, Pleasant Prairie, WI and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edwin Hartle; sister, Aggie Hennessy; and brothers-in-law, Tim Hennessy and Jerry Liska.
Memorials may be directed to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael ND in Louis’s memory.
