MARILYN A. BRAATHEN

Marilyn A. Braathen, 84 of Devils Lake formerly of Starkweather and Hampden, ND passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake with loving family at her side.

Marilyn Avis Oyos, the daughter of Alvin and Martha (Galasen) Oyos, was born November 27, 1934 in Langdon, ND and grew up on a farm near Hampden. She attended grade school in Billings and Storlie Townships and graduated from Hampden High School.

Marilyn married Gordon Braathen on July 25, 1953 in Starkweather, ND. They lived and farmed near Starkweather until 1988, when they moved to Devils Lake.  They spent winters in Apache Junction, AZ.  When they lived near Starkweather Marilyn was a homemaker and an active community member.  Marilyn was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards and games, and dancing. 

Marilyn spent almost 25 years custom harvesting with Gordon, Gordy, and Kent. She managed the bills and payroll, made meals for the crew, did laundry, and pulled her camper trailer. She was known for making homemade buns and the best cheese burgers around.

Marilyn is survived by her husband Gordon; daughters Debra Nies of Mesa, AZ and Michigan, ND and Marcia (Walt) Torning of Lakeland, MN; sons Gordy (Linda) Braathen and Kent (Sandy) Braathen all of Grand Forks, ND; 12 grandchildren Christopher, Eric (Yvette) and Nicholas (Alyssa) O’Brien, Maria (Tyler) Baer, Nils (Jenny) Torning, Martha (Drew) Stewart, Tyler (Jenny), Robbie (Jessica), Levi, Jesse (Carly), and Jordan (Savannah) Braathen and Jace Braathen; 14 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; 3 step great-great grandchildfen; sister Faye (Tom) Wermerskirchen, Park Rapids, MN; brothers Marvin (Connie) Oyos of Fergus Falls, MN and Keith (Barb) Oyos of Minneapolis, MN; sister-in-law Clara Lee of Omaha, NE and many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law Steve Nies; sister Yvonne Oyos.

Funeral Services for Marilyn will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Reuben Schnaidt officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 28th at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. led by Reverend Robert Buechler.  Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. 

Memorials may be directed to the St. Olaf Radio Ministry in memory of Marilyn.
