Marla J. Nelson

Marla Joy Nelson, 76 of Devils Lake passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024, in Devils Lake.

Marla Joy, daughter of Harold and Marion (Clifton) Swanson was born on May 4, 1948, in Devils Lake ND. Her early years were spent with the family in Montana. The family moved back to North Dakota and Marla was raised and educated in New Rockford, ND. She graduated from New Rockford High School with the glass of 1966. She continued her education attending a hairdressing school in Fargo. She worked as a beautician in Maddock and New Rockford for a few years.

Marla was united in marriage to Wayne Nelson on May 5, 1969, in Crookston, Minnesota. After their marriage they established their home in New Rockford for five years, and eleven years in Carrington. In 1987 they moved to Devils Lake and have called it home through the years.

Marla was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed the fun of collecting cups and saucers and many items with a duck theme.

Though Marla may no longer walk beside us, her spirit will be with us always. Rest in peace.

Marla’s loving family include her husband Wayne of 55 years, son Jason Nelson, Devils Lake, daughter Jessica (Jeff) O’Rourke, St. Paul, MN, grandchildren Brandon Thomas (Alesha) and Jobey, Jonas and Jorin O’Rourke, great granddaughter Eilee Thomas, brother Michael (Theresa) Swanson of Albany, New York and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Marion and in-laws Harold and Minnie Nelson.

Visitation will be on Monday, July 8, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, ND. There will be a graveside service at the New Rockford Cemetery on July 9, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jon Benson officiating.
