Mavis Yvonne Overby, 89, passed away at CHI St Alexis hospital in Devils Lake, ND on September 21, 2025.
Mavis was born July 20,1936 in North Viking Township in Benson County, ND to Melvin and Olga (Ness) Hjelden. She attended a country school and Minnewaukan High School. She married Darrell Lee Burdick March 6, 1953, and they had two daughters, Sandra and Debra. After Darrell died in 1954, Mavis continued raising her daughters in Minnewaukan and working at a local restaurant. She married Glenn Evan Overby February 1,1958 in Minnewaukan and they made their home on the Bisbee, ND farm where he had been working with his uncle, Jacob ‘Jake’ Lee.
Adding to their family, Mavis and Glenn also raised their children Paul, Daniel, Steven and Trudy. Mavis, together with her husband, enjoyed attending the kids’ basketball games, music events and other activities.
After 57 years on the farm, they moved to a Devils Lake, ND assisted living apartment. Mavis remained living there after Glenn died April 3, 2019.
Mavis and Glenn were active in the Mylo Lutheran Church where she often taught Sunday School and was part of the ladies’ WELCA. When the church closed in 2001, they transferred to Bisbee Lutheran. As part of her faith in Jesus, Mavis was part of the Cando-area Christian Women’s Club, and active many years in Gideons International along with her husband. While single, she enjoyed being part of a singing group with friends. Through the years, she enjoyed Bible studies and quilting with her friends, as well as family reunions and going to music events.
Mavis is survived by children Debra Jasper of Fargo, ND; Paul (Diane) Overby of Wolford, ND; Steven (Lisa) Overby of Gorman, TX; Trudy (Tom) Eide of Fargo, ND. Grandchildren include: Clifton (Alicia) Mattson, Rhonda Kittleson, Heath (Andrea) Mattson, Andrea (Dan) Bardell, Dusty (Samantha) Mattson, Kimberly (Jake) Norkus, Cody (Kali) Mattson, Casey (Kari Fritel) Mattson, Scott (Sheryl Sierakowski) Jasper, Chris Jasper, Jeff (Nikki) Jasper, Ryan (Allison) Jasper, Marit (Brian) Meland, Jake (Amy) Overby, Andrew Overby, Karissa Eide, Margo Eide, Amanda (Jonathan) Hughley, Erik (David) Eide, Britta (Rhonda) Schuh; her brothers Rodney (Diane) Hjelden, Jerry Hjelden, David (Mary) Hjelden, Jim (Audrey) Hjelden; sister Ardis (Curtis) Christianson; and 34 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Darrell, husband Glenn; son Daniel Overby; daughter Sandra Mattson; son-in-law Gary Mattson; sisters Janice Bonn, Joyce Greene and Clarice Cramer; brother Myron Hjelden; brothers-in-law Kenny Bonn, Richard Cramer; great-grandson Christopher Medlang.
Memorials may be directed to the Gideons Auxiliary, Lutheran World Relief, Messiah’s Lutheran Hour of Worship, Metigoshe Ministries or World Mission Prayer League in memory of Mavis.
The Funeral Service for Mavis will be on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bisbee Lutheran Church with Reverend Tom Stenzel officiating. Burial will be in the Mylo Cemetery following fellowship in the church dining hall.
