Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday (tomorrow) April 9, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Time of Sharing at 7:00 p.m. There will be a procession to St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Wednesday morning, April 10th from City Plaza at 9:00 a.m. with final farewell at the church and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Monte will be laid to peaceful rest in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Monte Ray Herman, “Sunka Wakan Duta” (Red Horse), the same name his great great grandfather was given. Monte was born on February 20, 1968 at Devils Lake ND the son of Celeste (Yankton) and Robert Herman Sr. He began his journey home to Heaven on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at the age of 56.

Monte grew up on the Spirit Lake Nation and called it home for most of his life. He attended school at Fort Totten and graduated from Four Winds High School.  Most recently he worked in surveillance at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort.

Monte no longer walks beside us, but his spirit remains with us forever. Rest in peace!

Monte is survived by his loving family. His precious mother Celeste; his children Fallon, Brett, Dylan, Jaydon, JoJo (Dallas) and Bobby (James); grandchildren Kaiden, Keith Jr., Kylan: Alahki, Malykye, Alec, Kateri, Heaven Koda: Carson, Amelia, Bentley: great grandchildren Azyla; siblings Austin Herman, Candace (Nathan), Holly and Robin Herman; godchildren Casey Legacy, Monte Fassett and Neveah Culbertson; many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives also survive.

He was preceded in death by his father Robert Herman Sr., son Monte Herman Jr., brothers Robert Herman Jr. and William James Herman, grandson Kale Greywater, grandparents Flora and Pierre Culbertson, Pauline and Mike Greywater and James Yankton Sr. and other relatives.

Pallbearers: Raymond Cavanaugh, Darren DeMarce, Boyd Herman, Merval McDonald, Brian Thunder, Martin Little and Austin Herman.
