Nelson Peter Paul Sandberg was born on March 16, 1936 in Benson County, North Dakota.  He grew up in the Brinsmade/Harlow area and attended school there, graduating from the local high school.  He entered the United States Army, on December 2, 1954 and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged November 26, 1956.

After his discharge, Nelson returned to North Dakota and began as a truck driver for Kurda Mills and for many years for Interstate Brands/Sweetheart Bread. Pete knew every bump, every curve in the road between Devils Lake and Greenbush, Minnesota.  When he could no longer drive semi for Sweetheart Bread, he worked at the Sweetheart Bakery in Minot ND. He proudly drove over a million miles as a semi driver. His handle for many of those years was "Snuffy".

Nelson married Sandra Lueck on February 22, 1964. They established their home in Devils Lake where they lived, worked, and raised their family. He was so happy when he became “Papa Pete” to his grandchildren.

Pete enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends and family at the Casino. He always hoped he might win the jackpot, but being able to visit with old friends and make new friends was important too.

He served his country with honor, always did his best to provide for his family and treasured his friendships.

Pete is survived by his loving family. His daughter Brenda and her husband Tom Jorgensen; precious grandchildren Dawson Jorgensen, Bryson Jorgensen and Shilyn Jorgensen, Amber (Ben) Sander and Zachary Sandberg; dear great grandchildren Bailey and Brighton Sander; special friend Videll; many beloved nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother of his children Sandra, son Brian Sandberg, siblings Ellen Scott, Alice Schwols, Lois Swenson, Johnny Sandberg, Carol Schwols, Joe Sandberg, Alby Sandberg, Curtis Sandberg and Donna Bird.
