Nicholas Frank Kuntz

Nicholas F. Kuntz, 83 of Devils Lake formerly of Webster ND passed away on Wednesday morning, October 4, 2023, at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital with family at his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Matthew Kraemer celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

Nicholas Frank Kuntz, son of George and Johanna (Bohl) Kuntz was born on February 4, 1940, on a farm near Tunbridge, ND.  He was 5th in line of 14 siblings. He attended a rural school until moving to Devils Lake with the family.

Nick worked various jobs in the area until taking off on his own to the oil fields in North Dakota. He then moved on to South Dakota to work on the Oahe Dam. After a bad automobile accident, Nick came back to Devils Lake to mend. There he met his loving wife, Verna Mae Keogh. They were married on October 12, 1963, and would soon have been celebrating 60 years of love and devotion to each other.

After their marriage, Nick went to Hanson’s Mechanical School in Fargo ND. He returned to Devils Lake and worked at Gouldings Oil, Lake Supply Company, and Powell Motors.  Nick and Verna made the decision to start farming, in rural Webster, his in-laws farm in Morris Township and Verna’s grandparents farm in Harding Township, where they raised their family. After retiring, Nick got bored and started working road construction, which he really enjoyed doing.

Nick and Verna went to the Rio Grand Valley in Texas for 19 winters with their camping friends. He was always ready to go in the fall, but always ready to get back to the farm in the spring, getting in a few snowstorms on the way home every time.

Nick enjoyed membership in the Knights of Columbus and was a life member of the Elks and Eagles Lodges.

Nick and Verna were blessed with three children, Karla (Terrill) Klein, Detroit Lakes, MN, Mike (Tina) Kuntz, Devils Lake and Kyle (Tia) Kuntz of Davenport, ND; there are six grandchildren Kaley (Alex) Stremick, Fargo ND, Laney (Jade) Witty, Fargo ND, Mallory (Austin) Sauer, Alsen ND, Jack Kuntz, Devils Lake, Nicholas Kuntz and Allison Kuntz both of Davenport ND; three great grandchildren Zander and Lydia Stremick, Morgan Witty and one on the way.

Nick is also survived by his brothers George Kuntz, Oregon, Richard (Wanda) Kuntz of Devils Lake, sisters Betty Wentz, Bismarck ND, Maggie Hermanson, Devils Lake, Joann (Odin) Gleason, Tolna ND, Bernadette Wentz, Devils Lake, and Barbara (Larry) Zahradka also of Devils Lake, many dear nieces, nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe, David and Peter Kuntz, sisters and brothers-in-law Frances and Gorden Moe, Amelia and John Schmitt, Rebecca and Covertt Long, in-laws Vernon and Mae Keogh, brothers-in-law Wendell Wentz and Milford Hermanson.

He will be missed forever by his family.

We give thanks to the nurses of Heartland Care of Devils Lake for their kindness and caring all the years he was there and the care and concern of the nurses at CHI, St. Alexius Health in Devils Lake.

Urn Bearers will be Randy Schmitt and David Schmitt of Towner, ND, Jack Kuntz of Devils Lake and Nicholas Kuntz of Davenport, ND. Reading the Scriptures will be Nick’s nephew Jim Moe and bringing up the Eucharistic Gifts will be Laney Witty, Mallory Sauer and Allison Kuntz.
