Paul James Higgins passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2026.

Paul was born on September 23, 1942, in Devils Lake, to Harry Higgins and Floy Brumwell Higgins. He grew up on the family farm near Sarles, North Dakota, and graduated from Sarles High School in 1960. He later earned a degree in Architectural Drafting from the North Dakota State School of Science.

Paul dedicated his entire career to the field of drafting and architectural design, working in Fargo, Sioux Falls, and Devils Lake. He took great pride in his work and had a remarkable eye for design, leaving his mark on countless projects throughout his career.

On March 17, 1983, Paul married the love of his life, Carla Engelby. Together they blended a wonderful family and made their home in Sioux Falls before eventually returning to the Devils Lake area. Paul and Carla shared a passion for creativity and design, spending 43 years transforming three houses into beautifully unique homes filled with warmth, character, and love.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Carla Higgins; children, Paul John (Jen) Higgins, Katie (Matt) Kramer, and Aimee Gilbert; his cherished grandchildren, Noelle & Harper Higgins, Madisyn, Morgann & Ryan Kramer, Mikaela, Noah, Matthew & Joshua Gilbert; his brothers, Daniel Higgins and Michael (Debbie) Higgins; his in-laws, Carlyle and Georgia Engelby; the extended Engleby Family along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Floy Higgins; his sister, Barbara Schumacher; his sister-in-law, Deb Higgins; his nephew, David Higgins; and his niece, Vicki Higgins.

Paul will be remembered for his sense of humor, kind heart, creative spirit, and the love he had for his family. The buildings and homes he designed and restored stand as lasting reminders of his talent, but his greatest legacy is the family he loved so deeply.

Your guidance, support, and genuine compassion brought comfort during a difficult time and allowed Paul to remain peacefully at home, surrounded by those who loved him most. We will be forever grateful.
