In loving memory of Paul Martin Hoghaug, a cherished husband, father, son, brother, advisor, and friend, who passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in 1964, in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Lynn and Bonnie Hoghaug. Lynn was attending Law School at the University of North Dakota at the time, and Bonnie was a registered nurse at St. Michael’s Hospital. Paul’s first 2 years of life were lived in what were affectionately called “The Huts,” the campus housing for married students.
The family moved from Grand Forks to Fargo, as well as Bismarck, before settling in Devils Lake, ND, for the majority of Paul’s childhood and high school years. He graduated in 1982 from Central High. He then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where he earned his Business Administration degree.
Following graduation, Paul moved to Minneapolis, MN. There, he worked for TCF Bank and was promoted into management. He liked to tell the story that although he had the beautiful corner office, he needed to be true to himself. He did not care for management at all and wanted to get back to working more closely with the customers. He enjoyed working at Ramsey Bank and serving on their Board of Directors for a time in Fargo prior to moving back to the Twin Cities.
The financial securities industry is where he found his professional stride. Paul enjoyed many accomplishments over his decades-long career as a financial advisor, including creating the Investment Departments at Anchor Bank in both West St Paul and Apple Valley, MN. He worked with prominent firms including LPL Financial, most recently as a managing director with Heritage Financial Advisors.
He dedicated his career to helping others achieve their financial goals, building lifelong friendships along the way. His clients, many of whom he worked with for decades, became like family to him. Paul would often say, “It isn’t work when you love what you do.” He truly loved being a part of his clients’ lives, helping them to maximize their financial potential.
Family was so important to Paul. He and Leah shared 22 loving years of marriage. The couple had a passion for traveling, both near and far. A most memorable and magical trip was to Italy to celebrate their 10-Year Wedding Anniversary. They also enjoyed spending time on the beautiful Minnesota lakes with family during the summers, fall getaways to the Colorado Rockies, and enjoying live music together. Simple family evenings at home with the boys were equally special, often with a friendly competition of sorts- maybe a boardgame, putting contest, or game of pool.
Paul’s pride and joy were the couples’ sons, Sam and Henry. He was always their biggest fan at every sporting event they competed in, and over the years there were a lot! The most exciting were the high school State Competitions- Track and Cross Country for Sam, and Hockey for Henry. Paul truly cherished every minute of fatherhood, also sharing with his sons his love for travel, hockey, music, and the ocean, as well as a strong belief in patriotism. He was never at a loss to offer fatherly advice, often accompanied with hilarious “life lessons” as he drew on his own experiences. He was an epic story teller.
Throughout his life, faith in Jesus was at the center. He was a strong Christian, helping to guide his sons also in lessons of faith and philanthropy. Not only did he regularly quote the invaluable verse “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48), he lived his life this way. Baptized as an infant, he chose to rededicate his life to Jesus in a water baptism just two years ago at his Colorado Springs church home, New Life Church.
Paul’s dedication to his family, sense of humor, and kind heart for others will be sorely missed and he will be forever loved. He is survived by his wife Leah (Heltemes), his sons, Samuel and Henry, father Lynn Hoghaug (Laurie Chatham), mother Bonnie Hoghaug, brother Erik Hoghaug (Karen), sister Monica Murphy, and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Please join us to Celebrate Paul’s life on November 9, 2026, at Hosanna Church, 9600 163rd St W (Door 5), Lakeville, MN 55044. The Visitation will begin at 10am, followed by an 11am Service and Lunch reception.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Jude Research Hospital.
