Obituary

Richard C. Durbin "Durby" a lifelong resident of Devils Lake ND passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at home under Hospice care, surrounded by his loving family.

A Celebration of Life Open House will be held Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Western State Bank Event Center (formerly Peterson Arena) Highway 19 West. Lunch will be served and provided by Dick and Louise Prozinski.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice in memory of Rick.

Richard Charles Durbin, son of Robert and Delores (Hietala) was born May 9, 1949, in Devils Lake ND. He attended school in Devils Lake, Lake Region Junior College, and Minot State College.

Rick had a career working in the childcare food program. He enjoyed visiting with all the daycare providers. He also was a hockey referee and a softball umpire.

His greatest joy of 35 years was driving bus, especially the special needs bus. He had great relationships with the school staff. Rick always enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

Rick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed visiting, cooking, and teasing all the family members. The most important thing he was noted for was his “Christmas Soup.”

Rick is survived by his wife Dorothy Weigel; daughter Alexis Durbin of California; Dorothy’s children: son Michael (Donna) Weigel, Devils Lake and daughter Michelle Weigel Greening and fiancée Mike Beyer, Detroit Lakes, MN; grandchildren Sabrina Weigel, Grand Forks, Madison (Jason) Garten, Grand Forks Air Force Base, Brooklynn Greening, Detroit Lakes, MN, Allan Weigel and Mary Weigel both of Devils Lake, and Scott Melbarzdis, Fargo; great grandson Cooper Richard Garten also Grand Forks AFB; siblings Tim (Susan) Durbin and Rob (Val) Durbin all of West Fargo ND and Jan Durbin Sauk Centre, MN; step-mother Cheryl Durbin, South Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews; faithful canine companion Bailey. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Delores, grandson Matthew Melbarzdis, and brother Ron Durbin
