Robert Larry Hatten

September 6, 1932 – March 26, 2026

Larry Hatten, 93 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Thursday morning, March 26, 2026, at Altru Hospital, Devils Lake, ND.

Funeral Services for Larry will be on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 11.00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, ND with Paster Lori Pankratz officiating. Larry will receive military honors following the service. Wednesday April 8, 2026, Larry will be interred in a private ceremony at the Devils Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, April 6, 2026, at the Gilbertson Funeral Home from 4.00 p.m. until 6.00 p.m.

Robert Larry Hatten was born on September 6, 1932, to Samual Kemper and Lena (Sorbel) Hatten in Devils Lake, ND. He attended school in Garske, ND until the 8th grade, then attended and graduated from Central High School in Devils Lake, ND with the class of 1950. Upon graduation, Larry attended Devils Lake Junior College and Business School, graduating with a bookkeeping certificate. Larry met Elda Kramer while she was training as a nurse at Devils Lake Mercy Hospital. Larry volunteered for active duty with the US Air Force and was stationed in Denver Colorado. While on leave they were married in Ashley, ND on December 27, 1953, and made their home in Denver Colorado. After his commitment in Denver, Larry was honorably discharged in March of 1955 and they moved back to Devils Lake, ND. Larry worked for State Machine and as an accountant in the Peterson Building. In 1960 Les Riggin hired Larry as bookkeeper in the automobile business and Larry spent the remainder of his career with Riggin Motors, retiring in 2002. After hours, Larry also did bookkeeping and tax returns for many years out of his home office.

Larry was a founding member of the Devils Lake Elks Band. In the early years he would play his horn in dance bands for extra money. Later years he played at the Senior Center in the Senior Center Band.

Larry was a long-time member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake and life member of the Devils Lake Elks Club. Over the years he served on many boards. He and Elda were very involved in all their grandchildren’s activities.

Grateful for having shared Larry’s life: Daughters Kimberly Hatten and Cindy and her husband Gary Axtman; Son Bob and his wife Sheri Hatten; Grandchildren Stephanie (Hatten) Thulien and her husband Steven Thulien, Danica Axtman and Kendall Hatten; Brother-in-law Don Little; several nieces and nephews and special care giver Michelle Morin.

Preceded in death by his parents, sister Eileen and her husband Gordon Fugle, sister Irma and her husband Duane Carter, brother-in-law Delmer Kramer, sister-in-law Verna and her husband Reuban Kappes, sister-in-law Inez and her husband Severence Kelley, and sister-in-law Joyce Little
