Sonja (Byberg) Clemenson

Sonja Ann Clemenson, 90 of Devils Lake, N.D., passed away on Tuesday January 20, 2026 at Eventide in Fargo, N.D. surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services for Sonja will be held Thursday, February 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Rev. Lori Pankratz will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Sonja Clemenson was born April 24,1935 to Otto and Elizabeth Byberg. She graduated Valley City High School. She received Registered Nursing training at Mercy School of Nursing in Valley City and Devils Lake. She met Merle Clemenson in Devils Lake, and they were married on May 26, 1957 and lived in Devils Lake, ND. They raised three children, Steven Glenn, Jane Ann (Brandt) and John Christian.

She worked at Mercy Hospital, Lake Region Clinic, and Lake Region Nursing Home for many years, then co-ran Bell Drug Store with Merle. They enjoyed summers at Wood Lake, ND and winters in Scottsdale, AZ. Sonja was a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi (sorority), bridge club, and numerous community organizations. She grew a large garden and loved tending to lots of flowers.

Surviving include: son, Steven (Dianna) of Lake Havasu City, AZ, daughter, Jane (Steve) Brandt of Argusville, ND; son, John (Kathryn) of Brandon, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Emily) Clemenson, Sonja Clemenson, Daniel Clemenson, Kristin Brandt, Stephanie (Chris) Pearson, Brianna (Spencer) Marty and Benjamin (Morgan) Clemenson; and six great grandchildren, Kherington Pearson, Blakely Pearson, William Clemenson, Anthony Clemenson, Peter Clemenson, and Rya Marty; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Merle; siblings – Jake, Clarence, Jeanette, Alyce, and Marilyn.
