Thelma "Temmie" C. Huhner

Thelma “Temmie” Huhner passed away on Friday, March 13th, 2020 in Warwick, ND. Temmie was born August 2, 1935 to Clarence and Frieda (Janke) Heuer on the family farm near Frazee, MN.

She graduated from Davenport, ND High School where she met the love of her life and husband of 62 years, Merle Huhner. They were married at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN on June 28, 1955.

Merle’s work with the Soil Conservation Service took the family all over the state of ND, from Grafton, Kenmare, Fessenden, and then finally to Devils Lake. When Merle retired in 1998, they moved to Fargo.  For the last couple years, her 3 daughters cared for her in their homes.

Temmie was a dear, sweet lady with just enough spit and vinegar mixed in to keep things interesting. Over the years she busied herself with many things while raising six children. She worked at the Pioneer Bar in Fessenden for a few years and then branched off into teaching ceramic classes, spending many hours in the basement with her kiln.  In Devils Lake, she worked at Montgomery Ward and for Nelson’s M and I Electric for many years, before opening her own candy store, Kid’s ‘n Kandy, in the early 90’s.

Anybody that spent any time with her knew that she was a delight to have a cup of coffee with and was always happy to just sit and talk. She loved a good game of Pinochle or a board game and was almost always reading one or two true crime books.  She just loved the challenge of trying to figure out who did it and why.  She loved watching game shows, her favorites were Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.  She had an incurable crush on Alex Trebek.

Temmie loved to cook. The house was frequently filled with the yeasty smell of dough rising in the kitchen and there was always enough fresh buns and gooey, creamy caramel rolls to feed everyone.  Sunday dinner was a thing to behold, with perfectly fried chicken and all the fixings.  Homemade pizza was another of her delicious specialties.  As usual, there was always enough to feed the family and anybody else who happened to stop by.  She loved to get out and listen to music and loved to have a drink or two and hit the dance floor, preferably to some big band music.

Temmie attended First Lutheran Church in Fessenden, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Devils Lake and Faith United Methodist Church in Fargo.

Temmie is survived by her children, Donovan Huhner (girlfriend Petra Swinehart) Lakewood WA; Jamison (Carla) Huhner, Nashville TN; Ronna (Friz) Brodell, Warwick ND; Daril (Ted) Rainesalo, Devils Lake; and Debra (Ray) Albright, Lakeland FL; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; brother, Dan (Loann) Heuer, Kindred ND; sisters, Maryellen Sundby, Fargo ND; Dorthea (Virgil) Hans, Davenport ND; Donna Hans, Davenport ND; and Virginia Hornibrook, Menifee CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; son David and daughter-in-law Kris Huhner.

A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo ND at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to Altru Home and Health Hospice P.O. Box 1100, Devils Lake ND 58301.
