Virgil D. Herald Sr., "Heḣaka Wićasta” (Elk Man) of the Spirit Lake Nation, began his journey into the Spirit World on Friday, August 5, 2022 at the age of 66 years.
There will be no wake at the family’s request. There will be viewing at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A Celebration of Virgil’s life and a lunch will be held on Wednesday, August 10th at 11:00 a.m. at the Tekakwitha Center in St. Michael, ND with Reverend Paul Schuster officiating. The procession to St. Michael will leave at 10:00 a.m. from City Plaza in Devils Lake.
Virgil Dean Herald Sr. was born on September 12, 1955, son of Mary Melinda Thompson (James) and William Henry Herald.
Virgil was a cowboy who loved to rock-n-roll to his 60’s music. He enjoyed many things in life. Some of which included spending time with his family, especially his family in Canada; going to Elder’s Day at the casino; horseback riding in his younger years as well as riding his motorcycle. Virgil was always concerned about his children and grandchildren whom he loved very much.
Virgil is survived by his children Virgil Jr., Tyrone and Twila Herald; brothers twin brother Vincent Herald, Donovan Kahnapace, Willis Herald, Delbert Herald and James “Jumbo” Thompson II; sister Ronda McKay; grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and many family and friends too numerous to mention.
Virgil was preceded by his parents; maternal grandparents Agnes and James Littleghost, paternal grandparents Sarah and Emil Herald, sisters Celestine Herald, Patsy Herald, Jeanette Herald, Trudy Theresa Brown, Marjorie Kirk, Roxanne Herald and April Herald, brothers Darren Herald and Daniel Herald Sr. and adopted daughter Leah Herald.
