He grew up on a farm there with his many loving siblings. He graduated from Lawton High School in 1961. After graduating high school, Richard joined the Navy on January 31, 1962, served his country during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. After his honorable discharge on January 29, 1965 with the rank of Damage Control 3rd Class, Dick moved back to Devils Lake and worked as a truck driver for local businesses. Many years later Richard met Joanne Leibfried. They were married on August 9, 1985. They made their home in Penn, ND where they raised three beautiful children, Tawnee, Dustin, and Brady. Early on in their marriage, Richard suffered a back injury, which prevented him to work outside of the home. He took to working on small engines in his shop. He took pride in teaching all three of his children about all of his tools and how to fix the things he would be working on at the time. In 2011, Richard and Joanne moved to Devils Lake. After moving to Devils Lake, Richard took on a couple of different hobbies. One of these hobbies included taking care of his grandchild, Rebecca Tohm. He babysat Rebecca for the first three years of her life. The two of them were quite the duo. They loved doing art projects together, playing games, and gardening. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing and those outings were always special when it included his family. Richard took pride in taking care of his grandchild until he fell sick in April of 2013 and was hospitalized for two months. After being released from the hospital in June of 2013, Richard came back home where he continued to garden and spend time with his family. He was a former member of the Devils Lake Eagles Lodge.
